2017-2018 Field Trip Schedule

Field Trip Changes for the 2017-2018 season

There are a few changes in our field trips that you all need to be aware of. These changes were instituted to make it fairer to those wishing to attend our most popular trips.

  • Trips that require advance registration will open for registrations 2 months before the actual date of the trip. The only exceptions will be the Pelagic and Flamingo Quest trips, which will open for registrations on January 1, 2018.
  • Priority will be given to Audubon Everglades members on several of the smaller, highly popular, advance registration trips. These trips will be listed as “Audubon Everglades member registration priority” in the online calendar. Please make sure that your Audubon Everglades membership is up-to-date.
  • Trips that have an associated cost (other than parking or entrance fee) will require payment at the time of registration. In addition, if you register and pay for a field trip but then cancel, you will receive a refund only if we are able to find a replacement from the waitlist.

Please see the September 2017 Kite for the reasoning behind these changes.

Audubon Everglades 2016-2017 Field Trip Recap

We have completed the 2016-2017 season of field trips and scheduled another set of exciting trips for 2017-2018. These new trips will be posted online and in a new Field Trips brochure that will be included in the printed September Kite newsletter.

Now for some statistics from 2016-2017:

We offered just under 120 trips led by 35 volunteers and had over 1,500 attendees.

Of these trips, 75 were “just show up” and 45 were by advance registration.

We had just shy of 1,000 people register for the advance registration trips. Of these, the most popular were:

Field Trip Scheduled Birders
Flamingo Quest 9 trips 463 people
STA-1E 14 trips 192 people
STA-2 (Non-Flamingo) 4 trips 59 people
Pelagic 1 trip 47 people
Lion Country Safari 2 trips 40 people
Grassy Waters Sunset Canoe Fly-in 2 trips 26 people

All of these trips will be repeated in 2017-2018.

Happily for some — but regrettably to those on the waitlist — all of our smaller, space-limited trips were sold out. These included:

  • Blue Cypress Lake
  • Cape Florida Banding Station
  • Corkscrew Swamp / Tomato Fields
  • Everglades National Park
  • Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park
  • STA-5/6
  • Three Lakes / Joe Overstreet
  • Vero Wetlands
  • Viera Wetlands / Merritt Island

Some of these trips will be repeated in 2017-2018 and some will be replaced by other offerings in a rotating schedule.
