According to a New York Times article yesterday,

“Five billion birds die in the U.S. every year,” said Melanie Driscoll, a biologist and director of bird conservation for the Gulf of Mexico and Mississippi Flyway for the National Audubon Society. That means that on average, 13.7 million birds die in this country every day.

That’s a lot. About a quarter of the population of US birds, it seems. Main human causes of death are blunt object trauma (running into buildings and other objects), death by feline attack (keep kitty indoors, please!), and pesticides.
