Greg will share his expertise and provide a fascinating overview of the Loxa-Lucie Headwaters Initiative\, a grassroots land conservation project of critical importance to our region. \nThis evolving effort focuses on preserving low-lying\, undeveloped lands east of I-95\, between the Loxahatchee Riverand the South Fork of the St. Lucie River—one of the few areas in southeast Florida where relatively intact natural communities still thrive. \nGreg will delve into the unique native flora and fauna of this region and highlight how private\, tax-deductible donationsplayed a key role in rallying support for the recently approved Martin County Forever referendum. This community-supported measure is a monumental step forward in safeguarding these precious ecosystems for future generations. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn about the impactful conservation work happening right here in our local area and how you can be part of it. \nAbout the Presenter \nGreg Braun is a professional ecologist with over 25 years of experience in environmental projects in Florida\, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Greg specializes in avian and coastal ecology\, and habitat restoration projects. \nCertified by the Academy of Board Certified Environmental Professionals annually since 2003\, Greg’s Jupiter\, Fl based company provides ecological consulting services to governmental agencies\, non-governmental conservation organizations and private property owners. He serves on the Steering Committee of the SE Florida Scrub Ecosystem Working Group and as past-President of the Martin County chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society. Greg was awarded the William Hornaday Award for Distinguished Service in Conservation in 2007\, and the Distinguished Services Award from the Martin County Conservation Alliance in 2001 and the Florida Garden Club’s Earth Steward Award in 2024. \nA graduate of Florida Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography\, Greg works with a variety of threatened and endangered animals and plants\, including Florida Scrub-jays\, manatees\, gopher tortoises\, Johnson’s seagrass and a variety of beach\, dune and estuarine species. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a short walk as you witness the behavior of these endemic birds.\n\n\nThrough a partnership with Jonathan Dickinson State Park\, Audubon Everglades invites you to join us on their Florida Scrub Jay Walk. \nMeeting Place: From the check in station\, take a left turn less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance. There will be a parking lot on the right-hand side. \nYou will see an information sign Camp Murphy Off Road Bridge trail. \nEntrance Fee is $ 6.00 per vehicle. \nThe Florida scrub jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) is one of the species of scrub jay native to North America. It is the only species of bird endemic to the U.S. state of Florida and one of only 15 species endemic to the continental United States. \nThe path is a well-documented spot where scrub jays have congregated for years\, and the federally-threatened birds are seen on most outings but not assured – they are wild animals. Any lightning close enough to hear thunder will cause immediate cancellation of the tour. Your guide\, Jim Howe\, will also accentuate the Florida scrub ecosystem itself and why fire is essential\, while pointing out gopher tortoise burrows and unique plants found only at JDSP. \nWalk meets less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance\, along the road to the Pine Grove Campground. We will take a once well-paved road\, that is now for foot and bicycle traffic only. The walk is between 1/4 and 1/2 mile in length\, on gently rolling\, open scrub terrain. \nRestrooms are located at the following locations: (bear Right from entrance) \nThe bicycling staging area at the Railroad Track Crossing. (porta-potty) \nThe Visitors Center at the back of the property\, about 4 miles in. \nThis is a monthly event\, the first Wednesday of the month.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a relaxing day of writing poetry and prose inspired by birds in nature!\n\n\nEnjoy a mindful nature writing experience led by Audubon Everglades President Scott Zucker\, who taught creative writing for 30 years\, and AE Board of Directors member Mary Young\, who has been writing since she was a child. \nWhether you’re a birder or nature explorer searching for a creative outlet\, or a poet or writer seeking inspiration\, Scott and Mary will lead you in discovering the perfect marriage: flora and fauna with prose and poetry!  You’ll be encouraged to gather material for your writing by opening your mind and senses to the birds\, wildlife\, and plants around you as we meander mindfully and make intermittent stops for opportunities to witness\, process\, and to record observations\, emotional connections\, and insights along the way. Afterwards\, you will be given time to create a draft of your experience that\, if you wish\, you will have the opportunity to share with the group as we gather to complete our creative journey. \nTools to bring for writing: a pad and pen/pencil\, or a cellphone or tablet. Don’t miss this unique chance to explore prime birding habitats and witness incredible wildlife! \nImportant Details: \nCarpooling Information: To minimize the number of vehicles on the berm\, carpooling is required. If you have fewer than four people in your vehicle\, please be prepared to take additional participants or join another car that has open seats. \nNew Registration Process: We’re trying something new to make the event smoother for everyone. Please follow these steps when registering:– Car Registration: If you have a group of four people you plan to carpool with\, please register together as one car. Select the option for a full car during registration. \n– Available Seats: If you don’t have a full car\, please register in any available car that has open seats.
