DESCRIPTION:Audubon Everglades Presents\n\n\n\n“Snail Kite Conservation: A Florida Success Story”\n\n\n\nPresented by Tyler Beck\, Snail Kite Conservation Coordinator\, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)\n\n\n\nTuesday\, April 5\, 2022 at 7PMZoom-Hosted Presentation (advance registration required)6:45-7:00PM Social time with fellow members and presenters \n\n\n\nAbout the Program\n\n\n\nSnail Kites have had an uncertain and changing status over the last few decades due to issues impacting their South Florida habitats\, including the rise of non-native flora and fauna. Lake Okeechobee has been important for the survival of Snail Kites in some years\, critically important in others. Tyler will share the research that assists FWC in the management of Snail Kite habitat in Florida. You will learn about the birds’ habits\, the challenges they face\, their latest breeding numbers and locations\, how they are adapting to Florida’s dynamic and shrinking wetlands and the shifting water levels on managed public lands\, and what you can do to help their survival. \n\n\n\nAbout Tyler Beck\n\n\n\nTyler Beck grew up in Lake Placid\, Florida\, where his parents were educators. He received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Florida Gulf Coast University and completed an internship working with Florida Scrub Jays in the Avian Ecology lab at the Archbold Biological Station. He next worked at Florida Atlantic University\, tracking Great Egret and White Ibis movements and habitat selection throughout the Everglades. He stayed on at FAU for his master’s degree\, focusing his thesis research on the characteristics of the unique avian communities of the Everglades Stormwater Treatment Areas.  In 2011 he joined the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to work on wetland restoration and bird monitoring at Lake Okeechobee. For the past seven years\, Tyler has been the Snail Kite Conservation Coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission\, where his main responsibility is the management of Snail Kite habitat. \n\n\n\nJoin us on April 5 and learn more about the iconic bird of our Audubon Everglades logo!

DESCRIPTION:Field Guides:  Natasha Warraich & Dr. Mark Cook. \n\n\n\nAudubon Everglades in partnership with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD)\, is pleased to offer this special “Flamingo Pursuit” in Stormwater Treatment Area 2 (STA 2) for an opportunity to see these iconic birds in the wild in Palm Beach County! Like all birding\, the birds are in the wild and free to come and go as they please\, so there is no guarantee to see the Flamingos on any specific date. Brian Garrett of SFWMD has recent reports of seeing 2-4 flamingos in this area. However\, this STA is restricted access with heavy construction in progress throughout the area\, and it is not open to the public. The trip will focus primarily on the area in which the Flamingos have been seen\, where we hope to offer some great birding and photography opportunities. Thank you to the SFWMD for allowing us access for this unique chance to see these majestic birds.  \n\n\n\nPlease read the rules as they apply to everyone!  \n\n\n\nREGISTRATION IS MANDATORY AND RESTRICTED TO ONLY 2021-2022 AE MEMBERS OR FRIENDS OF AE! Everyone in the car must be an active member of AE. Any person who arrives at STA-2 who is not an active member will be asked leave or they can choose and wait outside the entrance gate.  \n\n\n\nPLEASE 4 persons per vehicle! \n\n\n\nThere will be 2 trips posted to allow all AE members the possibility of seeing these magnificent birds in the wild only register for one trip.
