This is an amazing opportunity to explore diverse ecosystems—wetlands\, forested hammocks\, and tree islands—while reconnecting with nature at a slower\, more mindful pace. Keep an eye out for the swallow-tailed kite\, wood stork\, great blue heron\, white-tailed deer\, otter\, bobcat\, and alligator\, all of whom call this preserve home. We’ll meet at the nature center parking lot before setting out to take in the beautiful scenery that Grassy Waters Preserve has to offer. \nAbout Grassy Waters Preserve \nGrassy Waters Preserve is a 23-square-mile wetlands ecosystem in West Palm Beach that serves as the freshwater supply for the City of West Palm Beach\, South Palm Beach\, and Palm Beach Island. Historically a key part of the Greater Everglades watershed and the headwaters of the Loxahatchee River’s Northwest Fork\, this remnant of the original Everglades system makes up nearly half the land area of the city. A mosaic of wetlands\, tree islands\, and forested hammocks\, the Preserve provides critical habitat for threatened and endangered species\, including the Everglades snail kite\, wood stork\, and bald eagle—making it a vital link in the health of the greater Everglades ecosystem. \nLogistics: \n\nMeet Up: Meet in the nature center parking lot for check-in and Grassy Waters Preserve waivers. Corbett Wildlife Management Area. Located just east of Lake Okeechobee and 25 miles northwest of West Palm Beach\, Corbett is part of both the Ocean to Lake Trail and the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. \nThis underbirded gem is known for its rich biodiversity and wide-open natural beauty. Past trips have revealed exciting species such as Vermilion Flycatcher\, Red-headed Woodpecker\, Wilson’s Snipe\, Ash-throated Flycatcher\, and large flocks of Sandhill Cranes. With a mix of pine flatwoods\, cypress swamps\, and open prairie\, this location offers excellent birding for all levels of experience.  \nAbout J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area \nLocated about 25 miles northwest of West Palm Beach\, J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area spans over 60\,000 acres and is managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. As one of Florida’s oldest wildlife management areas\, it sits in the transitional zone between central Florida’s uplands and the Everglades\, protecting some of the highest-quality\, relatively undisturbed pine flatwoods\, hammocks\, and marshes remaining in South Florida. These lands provide critical habitat for a wide range of wildlife\, including bald eagles\, while also protecting important wetlands that support the larger Everglades ecosystem. \n \nMeeting Details: South entrance\, behind the check-in station. Look for a log home on the left-hand side with parking behind it. \nAddress: 11835 Seminole Pratt Whitney Road\, West Palm Beach\, FL 33412 \nDirections: From Southern Blvd\, take Seminole Pratt Whitney Road. This road dead-ends into J.W. Corbett WMA. You’ll pass the Palm Beach Shooting Sports Complex. Turn left into the WMA just before the canal. If you pass the canal\, you’ve gone too far. \nImportant Information \n\nRegistration Encouraged: Please register in advance to secure your spot. Walk-ins are allowed only if space permits and must sign a waiver at check-in.\nGroup Size: Participation is limited for safety and a high-quality experience.\nVehicle Registration: All people in a car must register\nArrival Time: Please plan to arrive early to account for traffic or GPS errors.\nEntry Fee: $3 per person or $6 per vehicle unless you have a senior pass. What was once unused utility land has been transformed into a lush habitat supporting a thriving ecosystem. More than 178 bird species have been recorded here\, including Purple Gallinules\, Anhingas\, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks\, herons\, egrets\, and seasonal migrants. \nThe three-quarter-mile elevated boardwalk winds over open water and marsh\, bringing you up close to nesting colonies\, basking turtles\, sunning alligators\, and the symphony of wetland life.
