Reach out at fieldtrips@auduboneverglades.org \n \n\n\nAbout Your Guide: \nCJ McCartney\, Environmental Steward & Audubon Everglades \nAfter moving to South Florida from Chicago in the late nineties\, CJ McCartney underwent a shift in interests. Unfettered from her company\, and now living in a subtropical climate\, she began cycling and hiking natural habitats and started noticing the wildlife that lived in and depended upon them for survival. \nAlong with a changing philosophy from “Somebody ought to do something about that\, to one day realizing that she could do something\,” she started learning how to be a knowledgeable and effective Environmental Steward. Along with training to become a Master Gardener\, she started taking a variety of botanical and horticulture classes and seminars to supplement her formal education from Harvard University in public policy and urban management. \nCurrently\, she is the Master Gardner in Residence at Ann Norton Sculpture Garden and serves on Audubon Everglades Advisory Board and several state and local Boards and committees. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun morning spotting birds on a guided driving tour at STA-2.\n\n\nAfter two years of construction\, STA-2 is now open for tours!\n\nJoin SFWMD guides Brian Garrett \, Sydney Kaufman\, Audubon Everglades Field Guides Kyle Matera & LeaAnne DeRigne for a rare opportunity to explore this vital wetland habitat. This special access is made possible through our partnership with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). \nDuring the driving tour\, participants will follow a caravan led by SFWMD employees along the levees\, stopping at multiple locations to observe and photograph birds and wildlife. At each stop\, sightings of secretive marsh birds\, wading birds\, waterfowl\, and other species may be seen. Target species may include Black-necked Stilts\, Limpkins\, Purple Gallinules\, Snail Kites\, Fulvous Whistling-Ducks\, Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks\, and occasionally rarities like the American Flamingo\, Least Bittern\, or Crested Caracara. \n \nAbout the Event \nGuides will help participants identify birds and share insights into their behaviors\, calls\, and habitats. This is not a walking tour; all observation occurs from vehicles or at frequent stops. Participants should be prepared to exit cars at stops and return to their vehicles to continue the tour. This tour is for ages 12 and above. We’ve teamed up with Jonathan Dickinson State Park to explore prime habitat for the Florida scrub-jay — a bright blue\, curious bird found only in this state. \nThis is an easy walk\, less than half a mile\, along a closed road through open scrub habitat. Along the way\, your expert guide\, Jim Howe\, will point out gopher tortoise burrows\, native plants\, and explain how fire plays a crucial role in keeping this rare habitat alive. \n Why come? \n\nIt’s one of the best spots to possibly see scrub-jays in the wild\nYou’ll learn what makes Florida’s scrub ecosystem so rare and important\nIt’s a short\, scenic walk — perfect for a quick nature reset\n\nWhere? Even as a kid growing up in Venezuela\, he always kept a copy of “A Guide to the Birds of Venezuela” by Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee and William H. Phelps (1978)\, the first bird field guide for any Latin American country\, within reach. Yet he only became a “serious” birder around 2006 when he joined his father on a birding trip with Venezuela’s Audubon Conservation Society to Yacambú National Park\, at the northernmost edge of the eastern Andes. After seeing a male Golden-winged Manakin (Masius chrysopterus) take off in front of him in the cloud forest\, he went home\, bought a pair of binoculars and was hopelessly hooked…Turned into a fully-fledged bird nerd\, Beto has been actively birding ever since\, often with his birding parents\, serving as a voluntary eBird reviewer for Venezuela since 2008 and joining several Audubon chapters as he moves around for work. A civil engineer working in renewable energy development\, Beto has lived in Mexico (Mexico City and Pachuca)\, Colorado (Boulder) and\, now Florida (Boca Raton) with his wife and two teenage kids.

Along the way\, your expert guide\, Jim Howe\, will point out gopher tortoise burrows\, native plants\, and explain how fire plays a crucial role in keeping this rare habitat alive. \n Why come? \n\nIt’s one of the best spots to possibly see scrub-jays in the wild\nYou’ll learn what makes Florida’s scrub ecosystem so rare and important\nIt’s a short\, scenic walk — perfect for a quick nature reset\n\nWhere? You’re invited to drop by and partake in the excitement anytime between 8:00 am. and 11:30 am. at the gazebo located in the middle of the board walk. This event typically involves sitting\, chatting with fellow bird enthusiasts\, and unwinding amidst the serene surroundings. It offers a unique opportunity to observe how bird activity evolves throughout the day. The gazebo provides some respite from the sun. \nThis location is accessible for individuals with disabilities and is perfect for families. The gazebo comfortably accommodates approximately 10 people at a time. \nThe Big Sit! is an annual\, global birding event that is non-competitive and proudly sponsored by Birdwatchers Digest. It was originally conceived by the New Haven Bird Club. Some have likened it to a “tailgate party for birders.” Within the gazebo\, we’ll establish an imaginary circle with a 17-foot diameter. From 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 am \, we’ll count all the bird species we see or hear from within this circle. That’s all there is to it. Find a spot\, sit\, enjoy yourself\, and then we’ll compile our observations. \nParticipants are welcome to come and go from the circle\, especially for trips to replenish food or water supplies. HawkWatch is a citizen-science initiative where volunteers count migrating raptors at key locations\, providing invaluable data to track population trends and guide conservation efforts. \nBut here’s some good news for you! We’ll explore many facets of pigeon-dom\, from their striking beauty and surprising diversity to the secrets of flight dynamics\, fascinating anatomy\, and centuries of human–pigeon connections. \nGarn\, author of The New York Pigeon\, brings stunning photography and stories from the streets of New York and beyond\, including a peek at his pigeon pilgrimages around the world. By the end\, you might just find yourself a little obsessed… and looking up every time a pigeon flies by. \n\n\nAndrew Garn is a native New Yorker\, photographer\, and author of twelve books\, including The New York Pigeon(PowerHouse\, 2018 & 2024)\, Subway Style\, Wildflowers of NYC (Cornell University Press)\, New York Art Deco: Birds\, Beasts & Blooms (Rizzoli)\, and most recently\, Brooklyn Arcadia: Art\, History & Nature at Majestic Green-Wood(Rizzoli). His photography and writing have appeared in The New York Times\, New York Magazine\, National Geographic\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Guardian\, Fortune\, Forbes\, Photo\, Stern\, El País\, Audubon Magazine\, Interview\, Vogue\, Elle Décor\, Metropolitan Home\, and many other publications. Garn has received a Fulbright Scholarship\, served as a U.S. State Department Visiting Artist\, and been an artist-in-residence at Zion National Park and Central City\, New Orleans. He has also been awarded the Graham Foundation Architectural Fellowship and the JM Kaplan Fund Furthermore Publication Grant.
