DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a short walk as you witness the behavior of these endemic birds.\n\n\nThrough a partnership with Jonathan Dickinson State Park\, Audubon Everglades invites you to join us on their Florida Scrub Jay Walk. \nMeeting Place: From the check in station\, take a left turn less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance. There will be a parking lot on the right-hand side. \nYou will see an information sign Camp Murphy Off Road Bridge trail. \nEntrance Fee is $ 6.00 per vehicle. \nThe Florida scrub jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) is one of the species of scrub jay native to North America. It is the only species of bird endemic to the U.S. state of Florida and one of only 15 species endemic to the continental United States. \nThe path is a well-documented spot where scrub jays have congregated for years\, and the federally-threatened birds are seen on most outings but not assured – they are wild animals. Any lightning close enough to hear thunder will cause immediate cancellation of the tour. Your guide\, Jim Howe\, will also accentuate the Florida scrub ecosystem itself and why fire is essential\, while pointing out gopher tortoise burrows and unique plants found only at JDSP. \nWalk meets less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance\, along the road to the Pine Grove Campground. We will take a once well-paved road\, that is now for foot and bicycle traffic only. The walk is between 1/4 and 1/2 mile in length\, on gently rolling\, open scrub terrain. \nRestrooms are located at the following locations: (bear Right from entrance) \nThe bicycling staging area at the Railroad Track Crossing. (porta-potty) \nThe Visitors Center at the back of the property\, about 4 miles in. \nThis is a monthly event\, the first Wednesday of the month. \nCancellation Policy: \nIf you register but find yourself unable to attend\, please be considerate of others and cancel your ticket. \n \nPhotographs are a wonderful way to capture the beauty and fun of our birding adventures. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Corey Callaghan as he leads us on a new birding adventure.\n\n\nJoin us for a new birding adventure at Oak Hammock Park\, a lush 11+ acre natural oasis nestled within the City of Sunrise. Guided by expert birder and scientist\, Dr. Corey Callaghan\, this unique park offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and educational exploration. Situated on the south side of NW 44th Street\, approximately 1\,500 feet west of Pine Island Road\, this park was acquired with funding from the Broward County Land Preservation Bond Program. There are meandering trails through the park’s diverse habitats\, including a canopy of centuries-old live oaks\, a pine forest\, and an ancient midden. The park features a porous paved walkway\, mulch trails\, and an elevated boardwalk that extends over the wetland section\, offering stunning views and opportunities for birdwatching. This is a new site for us\, and Dr. Corey will expertly lead the way through this area. \nEvent Details: \n\nMeeting Point: Use the address provided to meet in the parking lot. There are two entrances to the park\, so please ensure you use the correct address.\nRestrooms: Available on-site.\nAccessibility: Most of the park is accessible via sidewalks and boardwalks. There is a small portion with dirt and woodchips\, but it is close to the sidewalk and may be manageable with some assistance.\n\nImportant Notes: \n\nProhibited Items: Drones\, glass containers\, littering/dumping\, alcohol\, and illegal substances.\nRegistration Required: Advance registration is mandatory for participation\, and walk-ins cannot be accommodated.\nLimited Group Size: To ensure an intimate experience\, group size is limited. During this live virtual walkthrough\, Vanya Rowher will highlight some of ways that Cornell’s Ornithological collection is being used\, with the hopes that attendees gain a better appreciation for the value and uses of natural history collections. \nAbout the Presenter \nVanya Rohwer is the Curator of the Bird and Mammal Collection at the Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest\, he marked the seasons by the arrival and departure of migratory birds and the flowering and senescence of plants. Vanya is a firm believer that spending time outside leads to new observations\, new ideas\, and creative ways of thinking about natural systems. For graduate work\, he studied nest building behaviors of birds and\, to this day\, can’t seem to stop marveling at bird nests. Vanya’s interest in natural history collections began as a child roaming the hallways of the ornithology collection at the Burke Museum in Seattle Washington\, where his father\, Sievert\, was the Curator of birds. Because of this\, Vanya grew up steeped in museum activities that ranged from adventures in the field to tending the colony of beetle used to prepare skeleton specimens. There will be a parking lot on the right-hand side. \nYou will see an information sign Camp Murphy Off Road Bridge trail. \nEntrance Fee is $ 6.00 per vehicle. \nThe Florida scrub jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) is one of the species of scrub jay native to North America. It is the only species of bird endemic to the U.S. state of Florida and one of only 15 species endemic to the continental United States. \nThe path is a well-documented spot where scrub jays have congregated for years\, and the federally-threatened birds are seen on most outings but not assured – they are wild animals. Any lightning close enough to hear thunder will cause immediate cancellation of the tour. Your guide\, Jim Howe\, will also accentuate the Florida scrub ecosystem itself and why fire is essential\, while pointing out gopher tortoise burrows and unique plants found only at JDSP. \nWalk meets less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance\, along the road to the Pine Grove Campground. We will take a once well-paved road\, that is now for foot and bicycle traffic only. The walk is between 1/4 and 1/2 mile in length\, on gently rolling\, open scrub terrain. \nRestrooms are located at the following locations: (bear Right from entrance) \nThe bicycling staging area at the Railroad Track Crossing. Even as a kid growing up in Venezuela\, he always kept a copy of “A Guide to the Birds of Venezuela” by Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee and William H. Phelps (1978)\, the first bird field guide for any Latin American country\, within reach. Yet he only became a “serious” birder around 2006 when he joined his father on a birding trip with Venezuela’s Audubon Conservation Society to Yacambú National Park\, at the northernmost edge of the eastern Andes. After seeing a male Golden-winged Manakin (Masius chrysopterus) take off in front of him in the cloud forest\, he went home\, bought a pair of binoculars and was hopelessly hooked…Turned into a fully-fledged bird nerd\, Beto has been actively birding ever since\, often with his birding parents\, serving as a voluntary eBird reviewer for Venezuela since 2008 and joining several Audubon chapters as he moves around for work. A civil engineer working in renewable energy development\, Beto has lived in Mexico (Mexico City and Pachuca)\, Colorado (Boulder) and\, now Florida (Boca Raton) with his wife and two teenage kids.

We are excited to announce that we have exclusive access to this Wildlife Management Area (WMA)\, located near Fellsmere on the east side of the St. Johns River in southern Brevard County. This trail\, renowned for its abundant wildlife—especially in the cooler months—earned T.M. Goodwin a spot on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. It offers a unique opportunity to observe a diverse range of avian species in their natural habitat. Extensive freshwater marshes here are managed for diverse wetland wildlife\, and natural marshes previously altered by agricultural production are now being restored to support the long-term health of Florida’s fish and wildlife. \nEvent Details: \n\nLocation: Wildlife Management Area (WMA)\, near Fellsmere\, Brevard County\nField Guide: David Simpson\n\nRegistration and Carpooling: \n\nMandatory Registration: To ensure a smooth and organized experience\, registration is required. We cannot accommodate walk-ins.\nCar Registration: If you have a group of four people you plan to carpool with\, please register together as one car. The closest facilities are at a strip mall at B Road and Southern Blvd\, where you’ll find a 7-Eleven (15589 Southern Blvd) and Dunkin’ Donuts (15689 Southern Blvd).\n\nCarpooling Information: To minimize the number of vehicles on the berm\, carpooling is required. DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the ultimate birding chill-out session at the “Big Sit!” event at Peaceful Waters with  Linda McCandless.\n\n\nJoin us for a delightful day of birding and nature at Peaceful Waters Sanctuary on Saturday\, October 12\, 2024\, as part of Audubon Everglades’ annual Big Sit! event. You’re invited to drop by and partake in the excitement anytime between 8:00 am. and 11:30 am. at the gazebo located in the middle of the board walk. This event typically involves sitting\, chatting with fellow bird enthusiasts\, and unwinding amidst the serene surroundings. It offers a unique opportunity to observe how bird activity evolves throughout the day. The gazebo provides some respite from the sun. \nThis location is accessible for individuals with disabilities and is perfect for families. The gazebo comfortably accommodates approximately 10 people at a time. \nThe Big Sit! is an annual\, global birding event that is non-competitive and proudly sponsored by Birdwatchers Digest. It was originally conceived by the New Haven Bird Club. Some have likened it to a “tailgate party for birders.” Within the gazebo\, we’ll establish an imaginary circle with a 17-foot diameter. From 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 am \, we’ll count all the bird species we see or hear from within this circle. That’s all there is to it. Find a spot\, sit\, enjoy yourself\, and then we’ll compile our observations. \nParticipants are welcome to come and go from the circle\, especially for trips to replenish food or water supplies. Big Sit! circles can be found all over the world\, including in places like Guatemala\, India\, the Netherlands\, England\, Vietnam\, and New Zealand. \nLet the birds come to you! Last year we tallied 43 species just by staying in one place!

Are you interested in joining volunteers of all ages in making a positive impact in your community? Do you enjoy birdwatching? Are you a bird nerd? If so\, this workshop is for you! \nThis introductory workshop will focus on the life cycle of Purple Martins\, their unique relationship with people and how you can participate in conservation efforts as a Purple Martin landlord\, helper or observer. You will learn about the maintenance routine recommended by the Purple Martin Conservation Association and be invited to participate in future workshops during the January to July breeding season where we will go outside to do hands-on nest preparations and discussion at some of our ambassador locations in Palm Beach County. She has established partnerships with 12 ambassador locations\, including Wakodahatchee Wetlands\, Green Cay Nature Center\, and Busch Wildlife Sanctuary\, among others. These collaborations aim to reverse the declining population of Purple Martins by creating suitable breeding habitats. Shelly’s work has been recognized\, with her photos featured on the cover of the Purple Martin Conservation Association’s “Update” magazine. \nIn addition to her efforts with Purple Martins\, Shelly is also involved in Audubon Florida’s Jay Watch citizen science program\, where her photographs of the Florida Scrub-Jay have been featured on several covers of Audubon Florida’s Annual Scrub-Jay Report and other publications. Even as a kid growing up in Venezuela\, he always kept a copy of “A Guide to the Birds of Venezuela” by Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee and William H. Phelps (1978)\, the first bird field guide for any Latin American country\, within reach. Yet he only became a “serious” birder around 2006 when he joined his father on a birding trip with Venezuela’s Audubon Conservation Society to Yacambú National Park\, at the northernmost edge of the eastern Andes. After seeing a male Golden-winged Manakin (Masius chrysopterus) take off in front of him in the cloud forest\, he went home\, bought a pair of binoculars and was hopelessly hooked…Turned into a fully-fledged bird nerd\, Beto has been actively birding ever since\, often with his birding parents\, serving as a voluntary eBird reviewer for Venezuela since 2008 and joining several Audubon chapters as he moves around for work. A civil engineer working in renewable energy development\, Beto has lived in Mexico (Mexico City and Pachuca)\, Colorado (Boulder) and\, now Florida (Boca Raton) with his wife and two teenage kids. \nAutumn Kioti (they/them/ her) is our Education + Outreach Coordinator at Audubon Everglades\, a Certified Master Naturalist\, an environmental educator and the creator of the Bird Nerding series.When not nerding birds\, they are an interdisciplinary artist\, poet\, and performer with over 20 years of working directly with diverse audiences to foster environmental awareness as a vector for equity and inclusion. It is the only species of bird endemic to the U.S. state of Florida and one of only 15 species endemic to the continental United States. \nThe path is a well-documented spot where scrub jays have congregated for years\, and the federally-threatened birds are seen on most outings but not assured – they are wild animals. Any lightning close enough to hear thunder will cause immediate cancellation of the tour. Your guide\, Jim Howe\, will also accentuate the Florida scrub ecosystem itself and why fire is essential\, while pointing out gopher tortoise burrows and unique plants found only at JDSP. \nWalk meets less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance\, along the road to the Pine Grove Campground. We will take a once well-paved road\, that is now for foot and bicycle traffic only. The walk is between 1/4 and 1/2 mile in length\, on gently rolling\, open scrub terrain. \nRestrooms are located at the following locations: (bear Right from entrance) \nThe bicycling staging area at the Railroad Track Crossing. (porta-potty) \nThe Visitors Center at the back of the property\, about 4 miles in. \nThis is a monthly event\, the first Wednesday of the month.

We’ll begin our adventure from here.\nExploration: We will explore several key spots within the park\, and we may wade out to “Outback Key” for an immersive experience. Be prepared for knee-deep water depending on the tide and consider bringing a change of shoes.\nWhat to Bring: Sunscreen\, water\, snacks\, a wide-brimmed hat\, and insect repellent (bugs can be plentiful in wooded areas). DESCRIPTION:Join Steve & Melanie Garcia as we travel through this unique ecosystem.\n\n\nJoin Steve and Melanie Garcia as we explore the unique ecosystem of Frenchman’s Forest Natural Area\, a 158-acre preserve in Palm Beach Gardens\, Florida. The area features diverse habitats\, including pine flatwoods\, strand swamp\, scrubby flatwoods\, hydric hammock\, tidal swamp\, and wet flatwoods. \nLast year’s trip recorded 30 bird species\, including the Nashville Warbler\, Pileated Woodpecker\, and Summer Tanager. \nPlease note\, there are no restrooms on-site. The nearest restroom is 1 mile away at the 7-Eleven\, located at 2490 PGA Boulevard\, Palm Beach Gardens. \nAll ages and abilities are welcome; however\, this trail is not accessible for wheelchairs or assistive walking devices\, as it consists of dirt and sand\, not a boardwalk. \nIf you register and cannot attend\, please cancel your tickets.
