You are welcome here!Follow us on IG at @auduboneverglades. You are welcome here! \n \nDon’t miss out on this opportunity to become a true Bird Nerd! \nJoin Audubon Everglades – Where Nature is For Everybody! \n \nAbout the Presenter: \nAutumn Kioti (they/them/ her) is our Education and Outreach Coordinator at Audubon Everglades! \nAutumn is an interdisciplinary artist\, Certified Master Naturalist\, environmental educator\, poet\, and performer who passionately uses art to address climate change\, eco-feminism\, and the intersection of access to nature and mental health. Their work spans from South Florida to New York to international exhibitions\, engaging diverse audiences through diverse mediums like narration\, movement\, installation and poetry. \nThey write: \n“Arts and nature are humanity’s common language\, and my primary instrument as an interdisciplinary artist. I use this common language to tell stories\, whether through narrative\, movement\, installation\, poetry…. Within my current practice\, I confront issues such as climate change\, the confluence of the Anthropocene urge to conquer the environment and eco-feminism\, food justice\, and the intersection of access to wild space and mental health\, finding the correlation of each to the other impossible to ignore. \nIn confronting these issues over the last decades in South Florida\, New York\, and New Mexico\, my chosen media has been fluid and responsive to the environmental conditions in which I work. My diverse materials include garbage scavenged from trainyards\, footage from nature documentaries\, poetry\, weaving\, works on hand-made paper and Mylar\, even cooking and food\, as well as more traditional media for two- and three-dimensional work. I select my medium based on how the public can be best engaged in a site-specific piece: whether through installation\, or performance\, or workshops. \nTackling the environmental impacts of our society necessitates an acknowledgement that we are truly interdependent\, participating in the story of our natural and built environments together\, as a community and as a society. I frequently collaborate with organizations\, individual scientists\, other artists and activists: NYC Audubon\, Audubon Everglades\, Rohi’s Readery\, EcoAmerica\, the American Littoral Society\, the Wild Bird Fund\, firefly expert Dr. Sara Lewis\, landscape ecologist Eric Sanderson\, and more. I have offered presentations on art-based approaches to environmental justice and climate change as an ecoAmerica Climate for Health ambassador\, and conduct workshops at Rohi’s Readery\, a social justice-driven children’s bookstore. Much of this work is offered on a volunteer basis at established institutional spaces\, and the majority is entirely grassroots\, self-funded\, and engages a broad and diverse public of all ages and backgrounds.”

SUMMARY:History of Human Relationships with the Waterfowl Group with Dr. Paul Gray
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating journey through history exploring how humans have interacted with waterfowl\, led by Dr. Paul Gray!\n\n\nWe are thrilled to announce the launch of our 2024-2025 “Virtually There” series! To kick off this exciting season\, we’ve lined up a truly captivating presentation by none other than the renowned Dr. Paul Gray. \nDr. Gray\, an expert in avian conservation\, will delve into the fascinating history of human relationships with waterfowl. \nWaterfowl\, the ducks\, geese and swans\, are among the most treasured birds in human cultures. They are pets\, food\, watch “dogs\,” collector’s items\, the subject of literature and art\, harbingers of changing seasons\, hunting and birding trophies and even have had dog breeds created just to hunt them. North America hosts about one-third of all species in the world\, and Florida hosts most North American species. Paul will talk about the diversity of this remarkable group including our human interactions and fascination with them. \n \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Paul Gray is a Science Coordinator for Audubon Florida’s Everglades Restoration Program. \nPaul is based out of Highlands County\, near the Kissimmee River\, and has been working in Florida for 36 years\, with the last 29 for Audubon. His educational background includes a BS from the University of Missouri\, an MS from Texas Tech University\, and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. \nPaul provides technical support to Audubon policy teams on water\, land\, and bird management issues primarily related to Lake Okeechobee\, but state-wide issues as needed. This work entails representing Audubon in public and private meetings\, and helping develop Audubon oral and written comments on various policy and technical issues. He is a charter member of the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow Working Group and former co-chair of the Snail Kite Coordinating Committee. The Waterfowl is one of his favorite talks.

Working full time for the Florida Park Service for several years\, running two Florida Big Years and countless Big Days\, and extensive county listing\, as well as several environmental consulting jobs have led to an extensive knowledge of Florida’s amazing biodiversity. These days\, he continues to work on environmental consulting jobs as well as speaking\, leading trips at festivals\, and conducting private guided tours where he will share this knowledge with anyone who will listen. \n\n\n\nLuis “Beto” Matheus has always been interested in nature and wildlife. Even as a kid growing up in Venezuela\, he always kept a copy of “A Guide to the Birds of Venezuela” by Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee and William H. Phelps (1978)\, the first bird field guide for any Latin American country\, within reach. Yet he only became a “serious birder” around 2006 when he joined his father on a birding trip with Venezuela’s Audubon Conservation Society to Yacambú National Park\, at the northernmost edge of the eastern Andes. After seeing a male Golden-winged Manakin (Masius chrysopterus) take off in front of him in the cloud forest\, he went home\, bought a pair of binoculars and was hopelessly hooked.he turned into a fully-fledged bird nerd. Beto has been actively birding ever since\, often with his birding parents\, serving as a voluntary eBird reviewer for Venezuela since 2008 and joining several Audubon chapters as he moves around for work. A civil engineer working in renewable energy development\, Beto has lived in Mexico (Mexico City and Pachuca)\, Colorado (Boulder) and\, now Florida (Boca Raton) with his wife and two teenage kids. \n\n\n\nDirections: \nAddress: Bill Bird Marina\, 10800 Collins Ave\, Miami Beach\, FL 33154 \nFor those traveling from Palm Beach area\, please allow ample time for driving\, it is a highly congested area. It is approximately 1.5 hours from the West Palm Beach area. The GPS location can take you to a blocked entrance. If traveling from the North\, continue South about 1/2 mile and look for the Haulover Marina sign. \nAs you enter the parking lot\, head to the line of boats and turn to the LEFT. \nThere is ample free parking. \nThe Kelly Fishing Charter Company is a blue building. There are restrooms located at the end of the parking lot in a beige building. There are also heads on the boat. \n \nMap: \nhttps://www.google.com/maps/dir/25.9066347\,-80.1241048/10800+Collins+Ave\,+Miami+Beach\,+FL+33154/@25.9043623\,-80.1254628\,16.5z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x88d9ad14d95bee87:0xbe9999372c54999b!2m2!1d-80.1244298!2d25.9065884?entry=ttu \n \n \n\n\nWHAT TO BRING \nKindly pack your own lunch\, as there won’t be any food available for purchase on the boat. We’ll supply snacks and drinks. If you have specific dietary requirements or allergies\, we recommend bringing your own provisions. \nIt is usually breezy on the water. Dress a little warmer or wear layers. It is better to be layered with clothes that you can remove than to be cold and not have a jacket or sweatshirt to ease a chill. It can also get wet. \nWear close-toed shoes with a good rubber deck-gripping sole to prevent slipping or sliding as the boat deck is normally wet. \nBring sunscreen or a large hat as you will be on the water for eight hours. \nThis boat will venture 10 miles out to sea\, we recommend that you take appropriate measures if you’re prone to seasickness. If prone to seasickness\, look into over the counter medications\, and choose the nondrowsy varieties ( Bonine). The main prevention is to get lots of rest the night before! Also avoid alcohol and spicy food prior to trip. Eat something bland for breakfast (i.e. toast) so your stomach is not totally empty; keeping something in your stomach goes a long way to minimizing the effects of seasickness. Consider ginger products. We will provide Ginger Ale\, water\, ginger candy\, and also pretzels on board. \n \n***eBird List: We will maintain a shared eBird list to document our sightings.***\n \nWHAT NOT TO BRINGAerial dronesPetsSpotting ScopesTripodsWeapons

SUMMARY:Purple Haze: A Conservation Film
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Purple Haze: A Conservation Film” – Viewing of the film and discussion about our beloved Purple Martins!\n\n\nJOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE PURPLE MARTIN AWARENESS MONTH IN PALM BEACH COUNTY \nAfter millions of years of evolution\, treacherous migrations\, and forming a unique relationship with humans\, North America’s largest swallow species\, the Purple Martin\, has managed to become almost completely dependent on man-made nesting structures to nest and rear their young. Captain Zach Steinhauser has taken it upon himself\, after spending years guiding folks to North America’s largest Purple Martin roost\, to chase these birds across their range to understand exactly how this species put themselves in this position and discover a lost culture of bird-loving enthusiasts across the Purple Martin’s range. Zach’s journey takes him across the western hemisphere from the Great Lakes to the Amazon Rainforest all the way to the Sonoran Desert making unexpected connections at every turn. \nAfter the film\, Audubon Everglades Purple Martin Conservation Coordinator Shelly Rozenberg will be available to answer any questions. Donations to the event help support Audubon Everglades Purple Martin Program and conservation of the Purple Martin. Refreshments will be served. \nFor more information please contact Shelly RozenbergShelly@auduboneverglades.org@thepurplemartinqueen

SUMMARY:Light Pollution & Terrestrial Wildlife: Research Into Practice
DESCRIPTION:Learn how light pollution affects wildlife.\n\n\nThe past 20 years have seen an explosion of research into the adverse effects of light at night on wildlife. In this presentation\, I will describe and categorize those effects and how they affect species and ecosystems\, ranging from the disruption of circadian rhythms for birds to fragmentation of landscapes for puma. Then I will review the different means by which such impacts can be reduced\, including shielding\, reduction in intensity\, and the synergistic benefits of adjusting spectrum to avoid the most disruptive colors of light. \nAbout the Presenter: \nTravis Longcore grew up under the Northern Lights of Eastern Maine. He went to the University of Delaware\, followed by UCLA\, where he earned and M.A. and Ph.D. in Geography. He is now Adjunct Professor and Co-Chair of the Environmental Science and Engineering Program at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. His landmark article “Ecological Light Pollution” (Longcore and Rich 2004) and 2006 co-edited book Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting (Island Press) have come to define a rapidly growing research area in ecology. In 2022\, he received the Galileo Award from the International Dark-Sky Association “in recognition of outstanding achievements in research or academic work on light pollution over a multiple-year period.” He is also the President of the Los Angeles Audubon Society. \n \nNew Paper: A Compendium of Photopigments and Visual Spectral Response Curves \n \nLEDs and Terrestrial Wildlife \n \nhttps://www.ioes.ucla.edu/person/travis-longcore/

SUMMARY:Florida Scrub Jay Walk
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a short walk with Jim Howe as you witness the behavior of these endemic birds.\n\n\nIn collaboration with Johnathan Dickinson State Park\, we are thrilled to promote the Florida Scrub Jay Walk\, an opportunity to explore the unique habitat of the Florida scrub jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens). This bird species is native to North America and holds the distinction of being the only bird endemic to the state of Florida\, as well as one of just 15 species exclusive to the continental United States. \nImportant details for your participation: \nEnvironmental Conditions: Please note that there are no water sources or restroom facilities nearby. Be prepared for potentially hot conditions\, even in January. This walk takes place in a well-documented area where scrub jays have gathered over the years. While sightings are common\, they are not guaranteed as these are wild birds. In the interest of safety\, any nearby lightning that results in audible thunder will lead to an immediate cancellation of the tour. \nGuided Experience: Your guide\, Jim Howe\, will provide valuable insights into the Florida scrub ecosystem and emphasize the significance of controlled fires. During the walk\, you’ll have the chance to spot gopher tortoise burrows and unique plant species found exclusively at Johnathan Dickinson State Park (JDSP). \nMeeting Point: We’ll gather less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance\, along the road leading to the Pine Grove Campground. The route follows a once-paved road\, now designated for pedestrian and bicycle traffic only. The walk covers a distance between 1/4 and 1/2 mile\, over gently rolling open scrub terrain. \nEntrance Fee: Please be aware that there is a $6.00 entrance fee per vehicle. \neBird Observations: For those who complete the walk and wish to share their eBird list\, please send it to Paula at Paula@auduboneverglades.org. Your contributions are greatly appreciated. \nRestroom Facilities: Restrooms are available at two locations: the bicycling staging area at the Railroad Track Crossing (porta-potty) and the Visitors Center\, which is approximately 4 miles into the park (restrooms are available here). \nEvent Schedule: This event is held monthly on the first Wednesday of each month. \nCancellation Policy: If you register but find that you are unable to attend\, we kindly request that you cancel your ticket. This opens up the opportunity for others to join. Your consideration is highly appreciated. \nWe look forward to sharing this educational and enriching experience with you as we delve into the fascinating world of the Florida scrub jay and the unique ecosystem of Johnathan Dickinson State Park.

SUMMARY:Florida Scrub Jay Walk
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a short walk as you witness the behavior of these endemic birds.\n\n\nIn collaboration with Johnathan Dickinson State Park\, we are thrilled to promote the Florida Scrub Jay Walk\, an opportunity to explore the unique habitat of the Florida scrub jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens).

SUMMARY:Past\, Present\, and Future of American Flamingos in Florida
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Steven Whitfield takes us through a journey of these iconic birds.\n\n\nAmerican Flamingos are among the most iconic bird species of Florida\, yet their status in the state has been unclear for more than a century. For most of the 20th century\, flamingos were extremely rare in Florida\, and were largely considered to be non-native species by biologists and wildlife managers. Yet through the 19th century\, large flocks of American Flamingos were noted by naturalists visiting South Florida. Yet by the start of the 20th century\, the flamingos had disappeared\, the victims of unregulated hunting for food and for the emerging plume trade. Dr. Whitfield’s research has focused on clarifying the history and status of flamingos in Florida\, and increasingly focused on understanding requirements for population recovery of the species. In the fall of 2023\, a large influx of flamingos appeared in Florida\, and across the eastern United States. Dr. Whitfield will clarify the history of the species in Florida\, address cutting-edge science by conservation scientists to identify the origins of the birds\, and highlight efforts to help this species recover in Florida’s natural areas. \nAbout the Presenter: \nDr. Steven Whitfield is a conservation biologist and the Director of Terrestrial and Wetlands Conservation at the Audubon Nature Institute\, where he leads conservation research projects with rare and endangered species. Dr. Whitfield holds a PhD and MS in biology from Florida International University\, and has more than 20 years of experience conducting conservation fieldwork in the United States\, Latin America and the Caribbean. His research has included species ranging from amphibians to birds and in environments ranging from tropical rainforests to urban ecosystems in South Florida. Since 2015\, Dr. Whitfield has been working to build a scientific basis for the conservation and recovery of Florida’s iconic flamingos\, more than a century after the last large flocks of wild birds were devastated by hunting in the late 1800s. Dr. Whitfield is the founder and chair of the Florida Flamingo Working Group. \n \nDue to recent changes in Evenbrite\, we strongly encourage you to register at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIldOyuqjopE9NzUh30ccVXZrldoGx_wnGQ
