DESCRIPTION:Our field guide is Bob Hartman as we traverse this WMA.\n\n\nLocated in southern Palm Beach County\, west of U.S. Highway 27\, the A-1 Flow Equalization Basin (FEB) is Florida’s largest constructed storage feature\, part of the Everglades Restoration Strategies Plan to improve water quality. This 15\,000-acre shallow reservoir temporarily holds peak stormwater flows\, up to 4 feet deep. Controlled release directs the water to nearby Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) for nutrient removal before entering the Everglades. Note that the Western Levee is currently closed due to construction. \n \n \n\n\n \nMeeting Place: We’ll meet in the parking lot as you enter. (Before the first pond) \nIf for somereason the gate is not open for the parking lot\, we will meet near the restrooms\, which are now covered with a brown building. Avoid parking where the boat access is located. If you can’t attend\, please remember to cancel your ticket. For further assistance\, you can contact fieldtrips@auduboneverglades.org. \nCheck in is at 0750. \nDirections to the southern entrance near MM 60 of Highway 27 South: \n\nUse Highway 27 South.\nThe southern entrance is located near after mile marker 53.\nGPS Coordinates: N 26.398430\, W 080.58799.\n\nPlease be prepared for potential fog and GPS misdirection. \nImportant Notes: \n\nRegistration Required: Advance registration is essential\, as we cannot accommodate walk-ins. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a short walk as you witness the behavior of these endemic birds.\n\n\nThrough a partnership with Jonathan Dickinson State Park\, Audubon Everglades invites you to join us on their Florida Scrub Jay Walk. \nMeeting Place: From the check in station\, take a left turn less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance. There will be a parking lot on the right-hand side. \nYou will see an information sign Camp Murphy Off Road Bridge trail. \nEntrance Fee is $ 6.00 per vehicle. \nThe Florida scrub jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) is one of the species of scrub jay native to North America. It is the only species of bird endemic to the U.S. state of Florida and one of only 15 species endemic to the continental United States. \nThe path is a well-documented spot where scrub jays have congregated for years\, and the federally-threatened birds are seen on most outings but not assured – they are wild animals. Any lightning close enough to hear thunder will cause immediate cancellation of the tour. Your guide\, Jim Howe\, will also accentuate the Florida scrub ecosystem itself and why fire is essential\, while pointing out gopher tortoise burrows and unique plants found only at JDSP. \nWalk meets less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance\, along the road to the Pine Grove Campground. We will take a once well-paved road\, that is now for foot and bicycle traffic only. The walk is between 1/4 and 1/2 mile in length\, on gently rolling\, open scrub terrain. \nRestrooms are located at the following locations: (bear Right from entrance) \nThe bicycling staging area at the Railroad Track Crossing. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual book club event with Author Jonathan C. Slaught on a quest to find and save the world’s largest owl.\n\n\nJoin us for an exciting virtual event featuring Jonathan C. Slaught\, author of Owls of the Eastern Ice: The Quest to Find and Save the World’s Largest Owl. This captivating book tells the story of Slaught’s journey to safeguard one of nature’s rarest birds\, the Blakiston’s fish owl\, found only in the remote forests of Primorye\, a region where Russia\, China\, and North Korea converge. \nPrimorye\, a land where brown bears\, tigers\, and leopards coexist\, is home to this elusive and endangered owl. A chance encounter with the Blakiston’s fish owl transformed Slaught’s life\, sparking a lifelong mission to protect this species from extinction. In his pursuit\, Slaught navigated thousands of miles through harsh taiga terrain\, spending months with Russian locals who endure the extreme conditions of this untamed wilderness. His work also highlights the impact of logging on the owl’s fragile habitat and the ongoing struggle to preserve it for future generations of both wildlife and humans. \nFrom 2006 to 2010\, Slaught studied Blakiston’s fish owls in Russia for his PhD in Wildlife Conservation at the University of Minnesota. These owls\, the largest in the world at over 11 pounds\, rely on salmon and other aquatic prey\, despite living in regions where rivers freeze for much of the year. His groundbreaking research\, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences\, helped form the foundation for a conservation management plan to protect these rare birds. \nSlaught’s memoir\, Owls of the Eastern Ice\, published in 2020\, garnered widespread acclaim\, being named a New York Times Notable Book and earning spots on The Wall Street Journal’s Ten Best Books of 2020 and the shortlist for the National Book Award. It also won the 2021 PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. In this event\, Slaught will share his adventures in the field\, the challenges of conservation work\, and ongoing efforts to save the endangered Blakiston’s fish owl. \n \nAbout the Author:  \nSlaught received both MS and PhD degrees from the University of Minnesota\, in Conservation Biology and Wildlife Conservation\, respectively\, and an undergraduate degree in Russian Language from Drew University in New Jersey. He’s worked for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) since 2011\, where he is now the Regional Director of their Temperate Asia Program. His duties include oversight and strategic conservation planning of all WCS activities in Russia\, Mongolia\, China\, Central Asia\, Afghanistan\, and Iran. He also coordinates WCS avian conservation activities along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway from the tundra in the Arctic to the mudflats of Southeast Asia. Slaught’s writings\, scientific research\, and photographs have been featured by the BBC World Service\, the New York Times\, The Guardian\, Smithsonian Magazine\, The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, and Audubon Magazine\, among others. Audubon Everglades offers fieldtrips and programs for individuals of all shapes\, sizes\, abilities and identities. \nYou are welcome here! \nThe Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County strives to balance industry and nature to protect our community’s health\, safety\, welfare and beautification. The wetlands filter water as it travels through Palm Beach Renewable Energy Park and out into the larger watershed of the Florida Everglades. Boardwalks and benches along the trails are made from recycled plastic lumber. Trail paths are made from recycled\, crushed concrete. \nThe Authority set aside 300 acres of conservation area during the development of the SWA landfill and waste-to-energy facility. Tucked away in the Authority conservation area is a large rookery that harbors thousands of native birds\, including the endangered Snail Kite and the threatened Wood Stork. In partnership with Martin County Audubon and the South Florida Water Management District\, this escorted car tour provides an opportunity to observe Florida’s native wildlife and migrating birds across this 12\,000-acre area. The tour includes frequent stops for field views and bird sightings\, making it ideal for all ages and experience levels. Enhance your birding knowledge and appreciation with this educational and engaging excursion. \nEvent Details: \n\nMeeting Point: The parking area is located approximately 1/2 mile to 1 mile inside the gates. We will carpool to this area.\nRestrooms: Port-a-potties are available in the parking area.\nCarpooling: Carpooling is required to minimize the number of vehicles on the berm. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a short walk as you witness the behavior of these endemic birds.\n\n\nThrough a partnership with Jonathan Dickinson State Park\, Audubon Everglades invites you to join us on their Florida Scrub Jay Walk. \nMeeting Place: From the check in station\, take a left turn less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance. There will be a parking lot on the right-hand side. \nYou will see an information sign Camp Murphy Off Road Bridge trail. \nEntrance Fee is $ 6.00 per vehicle. \nThe Florida scrub jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) is one of the species of scrub jay native to North America. It is the only species of bird endemic to the U.S. state of Florida and one of only 15 species endemic to the continental United States. \nThe path is a well-documented spot where scrub jays have congregated for years\, and the federally-threatened birds are seen on most outings but not assured – they are wild animals. Any lightning close enough to hear thunder will cause immediate cancellation of the tour. Your guide\, Jim Howe\, will also accentuate the Florida scrub ecosystem itself and why fire is essential\, while pointing out gopher tortoise burrows and unique plants found only at JDSP. \nWalk meets less than 1/4 mile from the park entrance\, along the road to the Pine Grove Campground. We will take a once well-paved road\, that is now for foot and bicycle traffic only. The walk is between 1/4 and 1/2 mile in length\, on gently rolling\, open scrub terrain. \nRestrooms are located at the following locations: (bear Right from entrance) \nThe bicycling staging area at the Railroad Track Crossing. Situated on the south side of NW 44th Street\, approximately 1\,500 feet west of Pine Island Road\, this park was acquired with funding from the Broward County Land Preservation Bond Program. There are meandering trails through the park’s diverse habitats\, including a canopy of centuries-old live oaks\, a pine forest\, and an ancient midden. The park features a porous paved walkway\, mulch trails\, and an elevated boardwalk that extends over the wetland section\, offering stunning views and opportunities for birdwatching. Callaghan is an Assistant Professor of Global Ecology at the University of Florida\, where he leads the Global Ecology Research Group in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. His research focuses on understanding how species respond to human-induced changes in the environment. By adopting a multi-taxa approach\, Dr. Callaghan and his team integrate large datasets\, including those derived from citizen science and remotely-sensed products\, with advanced quantitative methods\, geospatial analyses\, and macroecological theory. During this live virtual walkthrough\, Vanya Rowher will highlight some of ways that Cornell’s Ornithological collection is being used\, with the hopes that attendees gain a better appreciation for the value and uses of natural history collections. \nAbout the Presenter \nVanya Rohwer is the Curator of the Bird and Mammal Collection at the Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest\, he marked the seasons by the arrival and departure of migratory birds and the flowering and senescence of plants. Vanya is a firm believer that spending time outside leads to new observations\, new ideas\, and creative ways of thinking about natural systems. For graduate work\, he studied nest building behaviors of birds and\, to this day\, can’t seem to stop marveling at bird nests. Vanya’s interest in natural history collections began as a child roaming the hallways of the ornithology collection at the Burke Museum in Seattle Washington\, where his father\, Sievert\, was the Curator of birds. Because of this\, Vanya grew up steeped in museum activities that ranged from adventures in the field to tending the colony of beetle used to prepare skeleton specimens.
