SUMMARY:The Nestled Nook: a bird lovers' book club
DESCRIPTION:Read about all things bird\, fiction and non-fiction\, then join our group of bird-brains for a fun evening of bird book talk!\n\n\nAudubon Everglades is proud to announce the return of our Book Club this fall\, presented in partnership with the Palm Beach County Library System. Together\, we invite you to join a community of readers exploring nature\, conservation\, literature\, and birds through inspiring books and engaging discussions. \nJoin us on November 16th at the Wellington Branch of the Palm Beach County Library System for a lively discussion of our featured book: The Feather Wars: The Great Crusade to Save America’s Birds by James H. McCommons. James has been a featured speaker on our monthly Virtually There program\, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to share his wonderful book. \nAbout the Book\nThe Feather Wars: The Great Crusade to Save America’s Birds (St. Martin’s Press\, March 2026) that tells the dramatic story of early conservationists who fought back when America’s birds were being slaughtered for fashion\, food\, and trade. SUMMARY:Cruisin' the Marsh: Birding at STA-2
DESCRIPTION:Join Audubon Everglades for a fun\, educational bird walk designed for beginner birders eager to learn bird identification at the preserve\n\n\nIntroduction to Birding: Stormwater Treatment Area 2New to birding? This is the trip for you. Join Audubon Everglades Field Guide Nikki Bryer and Cathie Calvert for a relaxed\, beginner-friendly driving tour through Stormwater Treatment Area 2 — a vital piece of Everglades restoration and a fantastic place to start learning birds. This slower-paced tour is built around teaching the fundamentals: how to identify species by sight\, sound\, and behavior\, and how to read a wetland habitat like a birder. This event is made possible through our ongoing partnership with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD).Why STAs MatterStormwater Treatment Areas are large constructed wetlands built to remove excess phosphorus from water before it reaches the Everglades. As water moves slowly through dense stands of native vegetation\, plants absorb nutrients from agricultural and stormwater runoff\, cleaning the water before it continues south into the Everglades Protection Area. Over the past two decades\, this network of STAs has cut phosphorus levels in Everglades-bound water by roughly 80%\, making it one of the most effective restoration tools ever built. Beyond water quality\, these constructed wetlands have become thriving habitat in their own right — supporting wading birds\, waterfowl\, and raptors\, and offering some of the best birding in South Florida. Why This Partnership Is UniqueSFWMD manages these treatment areas as working infrastructure\, not public parkland\, so access is normally limited. Our partnership gives Audubon Everglades participants a rare chance to get out onto the levees of an active restoration site and see firsthand how engineered wetlands are protecting the Everglades — all while exploring habitat that’s otherwise closed to the public. What to ExpectThis tour moves at a slower\, more deliberate pace than our standard STA trips\, with extra time at each stop for Nikki and Cathie to walk through the basics: how to use binoculars effectively\, what field marks to look for\, how to tell species apart\, and what different behaviors — feeding\, calling — can tell you about a bird. Expect plenty of time for questions. This is not a walking tour — all observation happens from vehicles or at brief stops nearby.Target species may include Black-necked Stilts\, Limpkins\, Purple Gallinules\, Snail Kites\, Fulvous Whistling-Ducks\, Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks\, and occasionally rarities like the American Flamingo\, Least Bittern\, or Crested Caracara.Whether you’ve never picked up binoculars or just want to sharpen your ID skills\, this trip is designed to build your confidence and get you hooked on birding. \nEvent Details• This is a carpool driving tour with 4 people per vehicle\, including the driver.• Check-In Time: 7:00 AM• Start Time: 7:30 AM• This tour starts promptly at 7:30 AM and gates will be closed — no exceptions. The company offers offshore pelagic trips as well as inshore and Intracoastal excursions designed to highlight the region’s exceptional avian diversity. \nPalm Beach Pelagics works with individual birders\, small groups\, and conservation organizations to provide efficient\, well-planned outings that balance productivity with enjoyment. SUMMARY:The Big Sit!
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the ultimate birding chill-out session at the "Big Sit!" event at Peaceful Waters with Linda McCandless.\n\n\nHave you ever wanted to let the birds just come to you\, instead of you going to them? Founded in 1992 by the members of the New Haven (Connecticut) Bird Club\, it is meant to be fun\, and some people have called it “a tailgate party for birders.” The Big Sit! is like a Big Day or a Bird-a-thon in that individuals or teams find as many bird species as possible. There is one critical difference – all observations must be made from within a circle no more than 17 feet in diameter. \n \nOur team’s Bit Sit! takes place at the gazebo located in the middle of the Peaceful Waters Sanctuary elevated boardwalk. From 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 am\, we’ll count all the bird species we see or hear from within this imaginary circle. The gazebo provides some respite from the sun\, but bring drinking water\, hat\, and sunglasses. Participants are welcome to come and go as you please from the circle. \n \nThe gazebo comfortably accommodates approximately 10 people at a time and the location is accessible for individuals with disabilities. \nLearn More about the Big Sit: https://www.thebigsit.org \n \nEvent Details\n\nMeeting location: Peaceful Waters Sanctuary gazebo on the elevated boardwalk\nAddress: 11676 Pierson Road\, Wellington\, FL 33414\nDate: Saturday\, October 10\nTime: Anytime between 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 am\nTrail Conditions: Elevated boardwalk\nRestrooms: Available within the Village Park Athletic Complex\nFree event\n\n \nRegistration is not required. \n \nWe will compile our bird observations and submit them to eBird. \n \nWhat to bring\n\nBinoculars\nCamera or spotting scope (optional)\nWater\nSnacks\nHat\nSunglasses\nComfortable walking shoes\nSun protection\n\n \nImportant Reminders \nFor the Peaceful Waters Sanctuary park rules\, please reference the Village of Wellington Parks & Facilities website.

SUMMARY:October Big Day at The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Document the return of birds to restored habitats and be part of the next chapter in the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ONA's birding history!\n\n\nBig Day Bird Count at Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area\nBe part of one of the world’s largest community science birding events! Join fellow birders at Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area for October Big Day\, an exciting global bird count that helps scientists better understand bird populations and migration. Whether you’re an experienced birder or simply enjoy spending time outdoors\, this is a wonderful opportunity to explore newly reopened trails while contributing valuable observations to eBird. \n \nAbout Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area\nJupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (ONA) is a unique coastal preserve where maritime hammock\, mangrove\, and upland habitats provide important stopover and year-round habitat for birds along Florida’s Atlantic coast. Since becoming an official eBird hotspot in 2019\, birders have documented an ever-growing list of species\, leading to the site’s inclusion on the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail in 2023. \nFollowing an extensive habitat restoration project\, the trails are reopening with newly planted native vegetation ready to welcome both birds and birders. October Big Day offers an exciting opportunity to help document the site’s comeback and contribute to its growing birding legacy. \n \nAbout the Event\nOctober Big Day is a worldwide celebration of birding and citizen science. Participants will explore the trails\, recording every bird seen or heard to help build a snapshot of migration across the globe. \nThis event is especially meaningful as we celebrate the reopening of restored trails and begin documenting how birds return to the revitalized landscape. Every checklist submitted helps tell the story of the habitat’s recovery and provides valuable data for future conservation efforts. \nBirders of all experience levels are welcome. Whether you’re a seasoned expert or just getting started\, your observations make a difference. Experienced birders are especially encouraged to participate and help expand the site’s species list while mentoring newer birders along the way. \nThe event also coincides with the National Public Lands Day celebration\, and participants are invited to enjoy the day’s festivities after the bird count. \n \nEvent Details\n\nMeeting location: Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum lot\nAddress: 500 Captain Armours Way\, Jupiter 33469.\nDate: Saturday\, October 10\nCheck-In Time: 7:45AM (please arrive at least 5 minutes before designated start time at 8AM)\nTrail Conditions: Newly reopened natural trails with varied terrain. SUMMARY:Guided Birding Driving Tour at Fran Reich Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are new to birding\, or an experienced birder\, there is something for everyone. Join AE field guides to explore this STA.\n\n\nJoin Audubon Everglades Field Guide Marcus Kelly and Kyle Matera for an exciting\, educational driving tour through Fran Reich Preserve — a vital piece of Everglades restoration and one of South Florida’s best-kept birding secrets. This event is made possible through our ongoing partnership with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD)\, and it’s designed to do more than showcase great birds — it’s a chance to see Everglades restoration science in action and understand why this landscape matters. \nWhy is Fran Reich Preserve important?Fran Reich Preserve plays a vital role in supporting South Florida’s water ecosystem and its birdlife. By capturing and storing excess surface water\, the preserve helps ensure natural habitats have a reliable water supply\, while also recharging the region’s drinking water aquifer and helping protect against saltwater intrusion in coastal areas. This mix of wetland\, marsh\, and scrub habitat also makes the preserve an important home for birds — wading birds and raptors like osprey and hawks forage and hunt across the marshes\, while more elusive species such as the Black Rail\, Sedge Wren\, Grasshopper Sparrow\, and Virginia Rail rely on the wetlands\, and wintering sparrows and migrants like the Yellow-rumped Warbler pass through the scrub habitat each season. \nWhy This Partnership Is UniqueSFWMD manages these treatment areas as working infrastructure\, not public parkland\, so access is normally limited. Our partnership gives Audubon Everglades members a rare chance to get out onto the levees of an active restoration site and see firsthand how engineered wetlands are protecting the Everglades — all while exploring habitat that’s otherwise closed to the public. It’s a hands-on opportunity to connect the dots between water management\, habitat\, and the birds we love\, and to help us spread that story to the broader community. \nWhat to ExpectParticipants will follow a caravan along the levees\, stopping at multiple locations to observe and photograph birds and wildlife. This is not a walking tour — all observation happens from vehicles or at brief stops nearby. Target species may include Black Rail\, Sedge Wren\, Grasshopper Sparrow\, and Virginia Rail.Marcus and Kyle will help participants identify birds along the way and share insight into their behavior\, calls\, and habitat use — turning every stop into a mini lesson in Everglades ecology. \nEvent Details• This is a carpool driving tour with 4 people per vehicle\, including the driver.• Check-In Time: 7:00 AM• Start Time: 7:30 AM \n• This tour starts promptly at 7:30 AM and gates will be closed — no exceptions. SUMMARY:Swallow-tailed Kites and Southeastern American Kestrels with Dr. Ken Meyer
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ken Meyer of ARCI on two Florida raptors facing habitat loss\, plus an Amendment 3 update from Audubon Florida's Julie Wraithmell.\n\n\nSwallow-tailed Kites and Southeastern American Kestrels: Different Responses of Two Predators to Florida’s Accelerating Loss of Native Habitats \nFew birds capture attention like a Swallow-tailed Kite gliding overhead\, or a Southeastern American Kestrel hovering over an open field. Both are predators\, both are part of Florida’s natural heritage\, and both depend on native habitats that are disappearing fast. But they aren’t responding to that loss in the same way. \nDr. Ken Meyer has spent more than four decades studying birds like these in the field. In this program\, he’ll share what his research reveals about how these two species are coping with a changing Florida\, why their stories differ\, and what it will take to keep them in our skies for generations to come. \nKen co-founded the Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI) in Gainesville in 1997 and serves as its Executive Director and Senior Research Ecologist. He’s also a Courtesy Associate Professor in the University of Florida’s Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. Over 44 years\, he and his team have studied 21 species of birds of conservation concern across North\, Central\, and South America and the Caribbean. His work has earned two Partners in Flight National Research Awards and a National Wildlife Stewardship Award for cooperative studies of Swallow-tailed Kites. ARCI is a nonprofit dedicated to rigorous research on vulnerable bird species that informs real conservation action. \nSpecial guest Julie Wraithmell\, Vice President and Executive Director of Audubon Florida\, will open the evening with an update on Amendment 3 on this November’s ballot\, what it could mean for Florida’s conservation funding and local services\, and why Audubon is urging a No vote. Julie has led Audubon Florida since 2018. Before joining Audubon in 2005\, she was a biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission\, where she created the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. She also received the Charles H. Callison Award\, the National Audubon Society’s highest staff honor\, for leading Audubon Florida’s response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster. \nRegister here to receive the link\, or watch live on the Audubon Everglades YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG0uyWb_SVROovvA2hhZapg \nHosted virtually by Audubon Everglades. Learn about the interactions plants have not only with each other\, but with birds\, pollinators and butterflies. Along with endangered habitats\, we’ll see rare and imperiled plants in different native plant communities and how they flourish in restored natural areas. \nWhether you’re a seasoned explorer or a curious nature enthusiast\, these hikes will offer fresh perspectives on the natural world\, helping you connect more deeply with the habitats and native plants that make South Florida exceptional\, unique and special. \nBring your camera\, your curiosity and hiking boots\, and get ready to expect the unexpected. \n \nWalk on the Edge as the Coastal Hammock Meets the Scrub \nGuides: \nCJ McCartney\, Audubon Everglades Advisory Board\, Environmental Steward \nMindi Ogden\, Audubon Everglades Board of Directors\, Chair of Plants for Birds\, Ecologist for the Preservation Society\, and Program Associate at the Institute for Regional Conservation \nJoin CJ and Mindi to explore an interesting oceanfront tract in Juno Dunes Natural Area where two ecosystems meet in a region known as an ecotone. Ecotones are special edges between habitats that have abundant plant diversity. The wildflowers and plants are amazing to see as the habitats merge in these unique areas. \nCurious? Interested? We will guide you through these habitats and the role the plants play where the coastal hammock meets the scrub. Along with examining the differences a habitat makes to plant life and to the wildlife that lives there\, we will observe the layers and niche environments for specialist species. Unfettered from her company\, and now living in a subtropical climate\, she began cycling and hiking natural habitats and started noticing the wildlife that lived in and depended upon them for survival. \nAlong with a changing philosophy from “Somebody ought to do something about that\, to one day realizing that she could do something\,” she started learning how to be a knowledgeable and effective Environmental Steward. Along with training to become a Master Gardener\, she started taking a variety of botanical and horticulture classes and seminars to supplement her formal education from Harvard University in public policy and urban management. \nCurrently\, she is the Master Gardner in Residence at Ann Norton Sculpture Garden and serves on Audubon Everglades Advisory Board and several state and local Boards and committees. She leads a Conservation Conversation and Art & Nature Series focusing on reconciliation ecology. \nTwo decades later\, that budding interest takes many forms – photographing nature\, speaking to community groups as well as designing/installing pollinator and wildflower gardens are just some of the ways it shows up today. \nShe approaches community service with an underlying belief that – together – we can mitigate the loss of natural habitats by creating a patch or a plot of wildlife friendly spaces to offer our homeless wildlife and native plants a safe and welcoming haven that establishes wildlife corridors while restoring biodiversity. \nContact information: CJ McCartney\, cjmpbc@gmail.com Instagram: @Botanizingbirdingbutterflies
