SUMMARY:DuPuis Wildlife and Environmental Area
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Corey Callaghan in this wetland and environmental area.\n\n\nJoin us on a birding adventure guided by expert and scientist\, Dr. Corey Callaghan. This unique experience combines walking and driving as we explore this natural area. We’ll drive and walk amongst diverse habitats in search of avian wonders\, including a special detour to locate the elusive Red-cockaded Woodpecker. Whether you’re an avid birder or new to the hobby\, this educational excursion is designed for all ages\, making it a perfect outing for families and nature enthusiasts alike. Join us for a blend of scientific insight and nature exploration that promises to enhance your birding knowledge and appreciation. \nEvent Details: \n\nMeeting Point: Gate 1\nGPS Coordinates: N 27 00 53.79 | W 080 32 11.85\nRestrooms: Please note that restrooms may not be available unless temporarily set up for hunting season.\n\nImportant Notes: \n\nRegistration Required: Advance registration is essential\, as we cannot accommodate walk-ins. Ensure your spot by registering ahead of time.\nLimited Vehicles: This is a carpool driving tour with only 8 vehicles permitted on the property. Each vehicle should carry 4 people\, so if you arrive with fewer passengers\, be prepared to join others or take additional participants in your vehicle. If you’re riding as a passenger\, please park at the entrance gate.\nPunctuality: We ask that all participants arrive on time\, allowing for any travel or GPS issues. Timeliness ensures that we maximize our time in the field.\nRain or Shine: This event will go ahead regardless of the weather\, except in the case of a hurricane.\neBird Participation: There will be a shared eBird list for this trip. To access and edit the list\, you’ll need an eBird account with a user ID and password. Learn more about eBird here.\nPhotography Notice: We encourage participants to capture the beauty and joy of our birding excursions. By signing the AE consent\, you agree to having your photos taken and used on our social media pages. If you prefer not to have your photos shared\, please inform us in advance.\nConsideration for Others: If you register but find yourself unable to attend\, please cancel your ticket promptly. This consideration allows those on the waitlist the chance to participate.\nSafety During Hunting Season: While this trip takes place during hunting season (September 1 – March 31)\, rest assured that we will stick to the main grade\, only briefly detouring to search for the elusive Red-cockaded Woodpecker.\nEducational for All Ages: Most of our events are designed to be educational for birders of all ages. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.\n\nFor any questions or additional information\, feel free to reach out to fieldtrips@auduboneverglades.org. We look forward to sharing this birding adventure with you! \n\n\nAbout Your Guide \nDr. Corey T. Callaghan is an Assistant Professor of Global Ecology at the University of Florida\, where he leads the Global Ecology Research Group in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. His research focuses on understanding how species respond to human-induced changes in the environment. By adopting a multi-taxa approach\, Dr. Callaghan and his team integrate large datasets\, including those derived from citizen science and remotely-sensed products\, with advanced quantitative methods\, geospatial analyses\, and macroecological theory. This comprehensive approach allows them to uncover the processes and mechanisms that shape biodiversity in our rapidly changing world. For more information about his work\, visit his research page. https://flrec.ifas.ufl.edu/faculty/dr-corey-t-callaghan/
